PYSL Recreation League Policies

The PYSL Recreation league is primarily played for the enjoyment, participation in a team sport and for the fun of playing soccer. The Recreation league is not all about winning, but is more about taking part.

All coaches are un-paid volunteers, and without their support there would be not be a PYSL REC program. PYSL has a  Director of Coaching who is available for assistance and direction for helping coaches if a need is determined.

The PYSL Year

The PYSL year runs from the start of the Fall season through the Spring season in the following calendar year to the next Fall season. The PYSL REC League is administered by the PYSL Board, which is a combination of Travel and REC families.

Cost and Expense

Fall Season $70/$60 Tiny Canes (September through October)* Played at Smith River Sports Complex
Winter Season $45 (December-March) Played at the Martinsville YMCA & Collinsville YMCA
Spring Season $70/$60 Tiny Canes (mid-March to mid-May)* Played at the Smith River Sports Complex

*Late fees are assessed after the posted registration deadline.

First Registration Deadline: Saturday, February 22, 2014 11:59pm (Tiny Canes - U14).  March 1, 2014 11:59pm (U16 & U18).

After this date/time, special requests will not be taken.
Any registrations taken after this deadline will be charged with a $10 late fee.  Any returning player may be reassigned to a different team at this time.

Teams

Teams are formed in the fall and a coach assigned. The same coach will typically be assigned to the same team for the spring; however, there will be some changes and some players will not re-register and some coaches may not coach again. The PYSL Board may also move players at the beginning of the spring season if a reason is deemed.

Please accept that PYSL will probably make 90% of players and parents happy by the team selection process. There is typically 10% of parents who are not happy because their child is either not with their friends, did get the coach they wanted or practices are too far away. Quite simply, we do our best, but PYSL cannot make all the people happy all the time.

Specific requests for team assignments for players to be with friends and relatives must be made prior to the first registration deadline each season to be considered. Requests may be made  either by phone,  email, or as part of the regular registration.

Registering a player after the first deadline is considered late registration.

Fall: All players, returning and new, will be placed on teams through a blind draft procedure, with every attempt made to keep the child grouped with players from the same school.

PYSL cannot guarantee that every player will be placed on a team with children from the same school. All players are assigned to new teams in the fall, while players remain on the same teams in the spring if the coach continues to volunteer for PYSL.

Players registering late will not be guaranteed placement on the same team as the previous season.

What PYSL Provides

PYSL provides soccer jerseys, shorts and socks which must be worn in all games. (returning players for the Spring are not issued a new jersey, shorts or socks)

The uniform order is placed at some point after the first deadline and initial teams and coaches have been assigned. The order involves getting player shirt sizes and team sponsors information together. Once that initial uniform order has been placed, all late player registrations will receive a blank team shirt only without any PYSL logo, shirt number or sponsor information.

Players will receive a new uniform in the fall season. If they re-register in the spring and play on the same team then the player will not receive a new uniform. Only players who did not register in the fall or players who are moving teams will have a new uniform provided.

PYSL pays the Smith River Sports Complex for the rental and preparation of all fields.

PYSL pays for all referees for U8 and above.

All players are registered with Virginia Youth Soccer Association.

If a player registers and cannot begin the season due to injury, illness, or family relocation, a refund will be given, less the cost of the uniform.

Refunds will not be given for any other reason as long as PYSL has provided a uniform and a coach.

What the Parent Has to Provide

Parents are responsible for providing shin guards and cleats for players.

Shin guards are to be worn under socks only and are mandatory during every PYSL practice and game.

Parents must also provide a ball for the player to take to every practice. Before the fall season only, Riverside Tire runs a promotion with Uniroyal that benefits each participating parent/guardian with a free soccer ball.

There is absolutely no smoking or alcoholic beverages allowed at the Smith River Sports Complex at any time.

All coaches and spectators must adhere to the PYSL Code of Conduct.

Arrange transport to the practice session and games for your player.

Parents or nominated guardians must be present with the player for all the practices and games.
